Advances in ground improvement using waste materials for transportation infrastructure

Recycling waste materials for transport infrastructure such as coal wash (CW), steel furnace slag (SFS), fly ash (FA) and recycled tyre products is an efficient way of minimising the stockpiles while offering significant economic environmental benefits, well improving stability longevity foundations. This paper presents some most recent state-of-the-art studies undertaken at University Wollongong, Australia on use (a) CW-based granular mixtures (i.e. SFS + CW, CW FA) port reclamation road base/subbase (b) using rubber crumbs, cell, under-sleeper pads under-ballast mats) to increase track reduce ballast degradation. Typical methods applying these different conditions are described results comprehensive laboratory field tests presented discussed.
